In the New Testament, the word usually translated as "servant" is the Greek term diakoneo, which literally means "by the dust." It refers to an assistant or one who ministers to another. In Acts 6:2, the word deacon is first used, referring to helpers in the church.
The responsibilities of a deacon depend on the needs of the church and the gifts of the men available. Thus, the diaconate allows for better utilization of resources and the gifts of all. It also enables a greater number of people to be involved in serving and helping one another.
“For those who serve well as deacons gain for themselves a good standing and great confidence through the faith that is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13)
